Your Foundation Pack contains the software you need to get your HP BladeSystem or ProLiant server out of the box, set up, fully configured and loaded with your choice of operating system and managed within your IT infrastructure.

Foundation Pack software, such as SmartStart and HP Systems Insight Manager, is included with most ProLiant servers and is licensed free for use.
Additional set up, configuration, and management integration tools are available for your ProLiant server from the HP web site. These extra tools can be downloaded for use within your organization as an extension to your Foundation Pack and are licensed free for use. Additional integration tools from select HP partners are also available and they carry their own respective licensing terms and conditions. HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM) forms the core of Unified Infrastructure Management, which centralizes management, control, and administration of the systems in IT infrastructures and data centers. Beyond its foundational capabilities, HP SIM is designed to be extended through plug-in modules, such as Insight software and Insight Control software, sold separately. HP has several different packages for you to choose from for Insight software and Insight Control products including: single kits, volume choices, and bundles with select hardware.
A single kit is the most basic package option for Insight software and Insight Control. Inside a single kit, you'll find an entitlement certificate for your license and instructions on how to register and redeem that entitlement. Media is not included. You may choose to download any software images you require and create your own installation media, or you may separately purchase an HP provided Media kit. Single kits will be shipped to you as a physical deliverable. Selective options for electronic license delivery are available - see volume choices for more details.
You use a single kit on one target platform; if you have more targets to cover, you will need to either purchase more kits with licenses or consider one of the volume choices.
The single kit is appropriate for customers who:
- Need software whenever individual ProLiant servers are purchased
- Purchase a few ProLiant servers at a time
- Own a few existing ProLiant servers for which the software is needed
- Can accept separate license activation keys based on their current business operations and IT administration workloads
Customers who are interested in purchasing quantities of Insight software and Insight Control software products at a time have several options to choose from. Some products offer multi-license packs, which is a single pack that contains a single license key good for a preset count of multiple uses, such as 10 or 25. If you prefer to have one kit that contains an exact number of licenses you specify a flexible quantity kit is for you. If you would like to establish a contract with HP that allows you to purchase licenses whenever you need them and then activate them through a master product license key assigned to your company, department, or branch, an activation key agreement should be your choice. Finally, HP has select options available for electronic license delivery, or E-Delivery.
Volume license options:
Some ProLiant servers are sold pre-packaged with Insight software and Insight Control software, allowing you to immediately extend the functionality of your HP ProLiant server solution. ProLiant BladeSystem solutions can be bought or configured to include the Insight Control suite, a bundle of Insight software particularly appropriate for BladeSystem solution deployments. Additional hardware and software bundles are also available. Refer to the online product pages and literature for more information.
Insight software and Insight Control product licenses have the following summarized terms and conditions for use:
- Depending on the product, a license generally applies to a single server, single blade, single blade enclosure, single network port, single virtual machine, or single migration action (such as virtual-to-physical).
- Activation of a product for its intended target is typically accomplished by entering a 25-digit license activation key.
- Once you activate your production software, it's good for the life of the target.
- You may not transfer the activated product and license from one target to another.
- Product upgrades and updates are chargeable, which you can selectively purchase as separate options or receive under the terms of an HP service contract
All Insight Control and most of the Insight software product licenses sold include one year of 24x7 technical support and software update service with three year uplift options available (sold separately). The Insight Server Migration software for ProLiant product licenses include one year of 24x7 technical support service, and customers are entitled to use the latest version of SMP Universal to perform their individual migration actions. Firmware-based products that are sold apart from an Insight Control suite do not include HP services as part of the license purchase, but HP technical support and software update services are available for them as a separate purchase. These products include:
- Integrated Lights-Out Advanced Pack
- Integrated Lights-Out Select Pack
- Lights-Out 100i Advanced Pack
- Lights-Out 100i Select Pack
- Accelerated iSCSI Pack
After purchase, product registration is required to obtain the applicable license activation keys. More information is available here.
For licenses sold before July 2007, customers can continue to access software upgrades and updates through the standard means they have been using, such as downloads from the HP web site. Click here for key Questions and Answers specifically regarding this case.
