Digital Personal Workstation 433a and 500a Notes

The files in this area represent the current HAL, firmware, ide driver and sound driver for the Digital Personal Workstation 433a and 500a with Windows NT 4.0.

It is intended that the firmware and the HAL be used as a matching set. Unless you have specific information that supersedes this text, please make sure that the firmware and the HAL is updated prior to running or installing Windows NT 4.0 on this system.

To install or re-install Windows NT 4.0 on this system you will need a HAL diskette and an IDE driver diskette.

NOTE: AlphaBIOS 5.29 or greater must be installed prior to installing the HAL.

NOTE: REGARDING UPGRADING FROM ALPHA BIOS 5.29 (OR LOWER) TO 5.30 (OR GREATER):

The ordering of the ATAPI driver has been modified. If your Digital Personal Workstation contains an IDE harddrive AND a SCSI hard drive, you will need to do the following steps after the upgrade of the AlphaBIOS:

  1. Go into the AlphaBIOS Setup by hitting the <F2> key once the Personal Workstationsplash screen appears.
  2. Go to the Utilities/OS Selection Setup menu by using the arrow keys.
  3. Modify the boot selections to "point" to the correct hard drive.
  4. Save the new boot selections by hitting <F10>.
  5. At the prompt to verify if you wish to save, press <Enter>
  6. Exit the AlphaBIOS Setup and reboot.

To create an AlphaBIOS update diskette:

  1. On the WWW, go to the URL: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/alphant/firmware/pw433.html
  2. Download the Personal Workstation 433a or Personal Workstation 533a AlphaBIOS ZIP file.
  3. Unzip the contents to empty directory on your hard drive.

See the file fw680.txt for installation information.

To create a HAL diskette:

  1. On the WWW, go to the URL: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/alphant/firmware/pw433.html
  2. Download the Windows NT 4.0 HAL ZIP file.
  3. Unzip the contents to empty directory on your hard drive.
  4. Copy the files to an empty FAT formatted diskette. Label that diskette:

Digital Personal Workstation hardware setup, Rev Feb 28, 1997 3:02 PM

See the file hal.txt for installation information.

To create an IDE driver diskette:

  1. On the WWW, go to the URL: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/alphant/firmware/pw433.html
  2. Download the Windows NT 4.0 IDE ZIP file.
  3. Unzip the contents to empty directory on your hard drive.

See the file ide.txt for installation information.
